Recent Years

The Church hall was demolished in 1998 to create an enclosed garden. In 1999 a new vestry and kitchen was constructed inside the main building along with toilet facilities and a storage gallery. Revd John Gibson retired in 2000. After a short period under the leadership of Revd Hazel Ditchburn, vicar at St Cuthbert’s Blaydon, Swalwell church became part of the new Parish of Blaydon and Swalwell in 2003 and continued to serve the community, as the only place of Christian worship in Swalwell. Revd Adrian Thorp and Revd Helen Thorp succeeded Revd Hazel Ditchburn. The re-ordering of the interior of Holy Trinity was completed in 2009.

The church was completely re-wired in 2012 and new lighting Installed along with new visual and audio technology. The programme of updating was completed in 2013, when the Church was redecorated. Revd Adrian Thorp and Revd Helen Thorp moved on to a new challenge in Derbyshire in 2018.

In 2019 after a wide ranging discussion within the Deanery it was decided that the churches in the area should be realigned which resulted in the separation of the Parish. Blaydon and Swalwell each became new parishes and became part of different groupings. Holy Trinity Church, Swalwell became part of the East of Deanery Grouping with Whickham, Hillside and Dunston. Each church in the group retained it’s own PCC and financial independence but there is a strong desire to work together, sharing resources and activities to the benefit of the whole group.

While continuing the role of Rector of St Mary’s Church Whickham, Revd. Barry Abbott became Vicar of Holy Trinity Swalwell in 2021, working with retired Vicar, Revd. Brian Howell, in the new Parish of Swalwell. In 2022, Gill Abbott was licenced as Reader in the Parish. Their ministry was impacted by Covid which limited their service in the Community. Following Covid, a more normal ministry was developed by everyone and the Church slowly recovered its place in the village.

Barry and Gill retired at Easter in 2024 and we began a period of vacancy.

Revd Brian Howell was subsequently supported by Revd Joan Urwin while she continued to hold a full time role as Chaplin at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.

Brian and his wife Irene supported the parish very well until, sadly Irene’s health deteriorated and she passed away in 2024.

In October 2025 we welcomed Revd James Scott and his family. James was appointed as Rector of St Mary the Virgin, Whickham and also Rector of Holy Trinity Church, Swalwell. This appointment allowed Revd Brian Howell to retire from his ministerial duties in Swalwell. Revd Joan Urwin continued to be a support to James until her own retirement in August 2026.
